RESTAURANT SUGGESTIONS
RESTAURANT ANTICO MARTINI
Housed in an old historical palace, once the residence of Admiral Vettor Pisani and other celebrated Venetian families, the Antico Martini was first established in 1720 under the name of Caffè San Fantin. After the opening of the Fenice Opera House in 1792, it became the favourite meeting place of artists, intellectuals, singers and conductors who patronized the coffee-house for their after-theatre revelries. Afterwards the name changed to "Martini", from the surname of the owner who ran it from 1863 to 1884, and since 1921 it has belonged to the Baldi family, now at its third generation, who has launched it as a deluxe restaurant, the favourite not only of dedicated gourmets, but also of
RESTAURANT DO FORNI
DO FORNI restaurant is located in the historical heart of Venice, in a tangle of calli (the venetian word for narrow roads) a few meters from Piazza San Marco and in the proximity of the most exclusive hotels of the city. It is one of the most popular, lively and representative meeting places of Venice. It is divided into two contiguous rooms: one characterised by rustic-elegant fittings, endowed with a century-old stone fireplace and looking out upon an inner garden-courtyard that brings back the memories of an old venetian restaurant; and another one, called “Orient Express‿ whose luxurious furniture accurately reproduces the equipment and the intimate and welcoming atmosphere of the restaurant wagon of the famous train that joins Venice to Paris and Istambul.
RESTAURANT LA CARAVELLA
La Caravella has an overblown nautical atmosphere and a leather-bound menu that may make you think you're in a tourist trap. But you're not. The restaurant contains four dining rooms and a courtyard for summer. The decor is rustically elegant, with frescoed ceilings, flowers, and wrought-iron lighting fixtures.
RESTAURANT CORTE SCONTA
The Corte Sconta is behind a narrow storefront you'd ignore if you didn't know about this place. This modest restaurant boasts a multicolored marble floor, plain wooden tables, and not much of an attempt at decoration. It has become well known, however, as a gathering place for artists, writers, and filmmakers. As the depiction of the satyr chasing the mermaid above the entrance implies, it's a fish restaurant, serving a variety of grilled creations.
RESTAURANT TERRAZZA GOLDONI
In the centre of Venice, just by the city's major tourist attractions, five minutes from Saint Mark's square and equally near the Rialto Bridge and the famous Theatre, we find the Terrazza Goldoni Restaurant, with two elegant, spacious and airy rooms decorated with original art nouveau furniture.
The restaurant also vaunts a large terrace full of flowers, which can be covered if necessary, dominated by a splendid glass fountain made by a famous Murano glasswork. This area faces the BACINO ORSEOLO, a widening of the canal built in 1869 as landing stage for the gondolas which set out, by day and by night, for fascinating serenades on the Canal Grande.
RESTAURANT LA COLOMBA
This is one of Venice's most distinctive trattorie, its history going back at least a century. In 1985, a $2 million renovation improved the place, making it a more attractive foil for the modern paintings adorning its walls (they change seasonally and are for sale). Menu items are likely to include at least five daily specials based on Venice's time-honored cuisine
RESTAURANT AE POSTE VECIE
This charming restaurant is near the Rialto fish market and connected to the rest of the city by a small privately owned bridge. It opened in the early 1500s as a post office--when they used to serve food to fortify the mail carriers. Today it's the oldest restaurant in Venice, with a pair of intimate rooms (both graced with paneling, murals, and 16th-century mantelpieces) and a courtyard.
