 Description Agrigento

Agrigento is a city of Sicily which has about 60,000 inhabitants and is also capital of the province. It's placed over a mountainous plateau which opens to the sea and then completely dominated the famous Valley of the Temples. It’s a wonderful valley, which also has a considerable influence on the same fascination of Agrigento fact the ruins of Doric temples of Greek origin here and characterized by stone colors changing from the brown integrate with the surrounding vegetation giving the visitor visual experience unique.

Agrigento during its history has seen the alternation of many civilizations, as Greek and Romany, and for ever in this city are born celebrities and famous as the great writer Luigi Pirandello, or the philosopher Empedocles. The Byzantine brought their culture in this city: in the Valley of the Temples is very evocative of the flowering almond culminating in the traditional festival of Almond blossoms in the middle of winter.

Agrigento has a beautiful old town, all perched in the western part of the hill where the city, and in antiquity was called "Girgenti. During the Middle Ages, the whole city was surrounded by a very long wall, which had 12 gates also throughout the wall was also dug a ditch to prevent access to alleys. In the highest part of the hill stood the Castle, built between X and XI century but subsequently destroyed (1907) to build the reservoir of municipal Voltano. Inside its walls the city grew and enriched with many noble palaces, museums, convents and monasteries, as well as the now famous Cathedral of St. Gerlando.
