 Description Belluno

Belluno, “dazzling hill” from the celtic belo-dunum, is a city with roman origins founded between the 200 and 220 a.c that very soon, beginning from Augusto become an important military site based on the more important communication way towards the north, the Claudia Augusta Altinate, defended from a tower, what today it is the castle of Zumelle.

Belluno is situated between the torrent Ardo and the Piave with to north the dolomitic group with the Schiara (Mount Servant, Mount Talvena), to south the Prealps and the zone of the Castionese with the Nevegal and its systems of skilifts and tracks from ski. With the fall of the Roman Empire, Belluno passed before under the longobardic domani and therefore under the carolingio one. In century IX it began the government of Conte Bishop and the city became rich of the castle, of the town-walls building and doors and towers.

Between century IX and the XIII the city was influenced from the family of the Ezzelini and several wars with Treviso in which from the maximum expansion until the plain of Montebelluna it was arrived to the definitive defeat in 1260. In the 1404 city it was submitted to Venice and it began to know one new economic prosperity thanks also to the Piave that allowed to exchange of lumber between the Cadore and the “Serenissima” one. Last later on under the Austrian dominion, therefore to the Reign of Italy, the city contributed very many in the War of Liberation and the fights Partisans during the second world war.

Rocco with works of Saint Father from Venice and Luigi Cima, the Church of Santo Stefano with works of Andrea Brustolon, Andrea di Foro, Jacopo from Montagnana, Francisco of Dia, Francisco Frigimelica and burlaps of the school of the Vecellio, Crepadona palace with the sarcofago of Flavio Ostilio, Short Barcelloni palace, Doglioni palace, palace Pylons, palace of the Bishops, churches of Saint Maria di Loreto, Saint Gervasio, Saint Nicolò, Saint Giuseppe “marangon” (carpenter).
